.net: What’s the process you go through when you create something like Cycles?

CH: I’d had the idea for Cycles a few years ago. It’s a recurring theme of mine to take a basic piece of video footage and mess about with it to the point of insanity. I also had a teddy bear that I’d created for some other project who wanted to star in his own film. Added to this was a new video camera I wanted to test out, and a song I had made that needed some visuals – so with all these ingredients the film more or less made itself. I don’t usually even storyboard my animations – I start with a vague version of the finished film in my head, and spend the next few weeks throwing the elements together until they do what I want. The results aren’t always predictable, but usually interesting.

el wire and why they rule!

jason eppink has done some really nice projects featuring technology that simply amazes me : el-wire.
phosphorized wire that when electrified shines through the outer layer of colored plastic. thereby creating a nice neon pipe feel but fexible and cheap its way more steady for diy projects.

well here is a short movie on his light ripple project.

its basically a buton that when pressed fires off a predefined rhythm looking like water ripples. the tech behind is the el-wire, some relays and a boarduino an arduino clone.
he has an interesting point which ive seen in my own projects as well.

Most interesting (and least apparent) is how knowledge of the Light Ripple’s interaction model becomes a social currency. The only clue to the sculpture’s operation is a small lighted push-button which is easy to overlook in the chaotic environment. Possessors of this knowledge exhibit how “in the know” they are and increase their perceived social value by sharing the secret with their peers, which perpetuates interaction with the sculpture throughout the night.

bew sure to check out his site for further nice projects and riotness. he is a proven anti advertising shark - my kind a guy hehe

by the way there is build photos of the ripple project at his flickr site

as it is japanese only a google translation helped me to discover what all this were about.
apparantly this is the maker:

and the text propably describes somethig about him and his works but as far as i know google doesent traslate text inside pictures yet so that must be an assignment for my japanese readers ;-)

well anyway this guy and his friends is making some really inventive stuff with cameras and time.
firstly an original stopmotion video featuring a nice classical(i think) piece which ive once played something from but have forgot the name of. and the theme of the video is blck and white. it features a lot of classic stopmotion tricks but the theme and the music glues it all together really nice. watch below:

the other video is a timelapse featuring some strange photo stitching technique that takes care of placing the picture in a black space according to the content of the previous image. in this way we get rumbling boarders of the picture while the content is static moving only in smooth.
what i mean is that the photos are stitched together over time so that the motif isnt rumbling around. kind of reminds me of that youtube sensation a few months ago with the stopmotion made out of real paper photos thrown around a kitchen to tell a story about a pig and a boy if i remember right.
anyway here it is and again the music is really nice!

to find him ckeck out this google translate of his site:
dokugyunyu.boo.jp
and if any japanese read this please help me translate the info on the picture!!! :-)

stopmotion machine is a sketch distributed in exported applet-form and open source.

it uses control the playstation 3 eye camera and controlp5 to have a seperate control window for controls and onion slicing (showing the old frame and the new mixed together) and a liveview window.

it has the following options:
save images on/off
demo/camera mode
debugging terminal in control window
‘new movie’ naming
framerate

it is in alpha phase still but fully functional and colol looking. plus easy to use and transparent in terms of that you get told through the debugging terminal everything the programm does IN ENGLISH hehe

the reason for alpha is that the programm has two fades that are not doing anything yet, plus the only option to use a ps3 eye camera.
these plus other features will be released soon.

beta testing supplied by kenneth danielsen

here is the sourcecode

and here is the software package
ps. the software package contains everything you need to run the program plus sourcecode and a few words from the author.

bringing the dj part back to the vj

the above should pretty much give away my vision for the future vj.
two turntables with animation discs on, two video cameras, a video mixer and either a tv or projector (tv is for tuff guys - watch out !!)
and an option accessory is a big titted alien babe for show off.

anyway here is a story from the future:

the vj arrives with his two decks, two cameras and a mixer, he walks up to the stage and aligns his hardware on the table. he pulls out his record bag and carefully chooses a disc from the many.
he takes another favorite and puts them both on each turntable.
he adjusts the cameras and plugs in the projector to the mixer.
he starts two scratch out his chosen video clips while the cameras are adjusted by a custom motor that moves them from one animation groove to another by the move of a fader.
people get all crazy about him and lick his feet but all he does is saying “well i brought the hardware now you do the turning” and leaves the stage for the audience to play with his machinery.
late nite he leaves the bar after having a good evening with lots of playmates in the animation playground he drinks his last G&T, packs his hardware and heads on for the next venue in the endless list of to-do’s
